Pellet, a economical and ecological choice.
The advantages of a fuel in pellet format
Less volume, less stocking and transport costs
The lower volume of pellet compared to wood chips results in a series of associated cost reductions, such as stocking and transport. Consider average quality wood chips (which is usually with a humidity higher than 10 %), pellet can have as much as 4 times more energy density.
Low humidity
Energetic efficiency and superior quality of the combustion
Higher energetic density
Pellet has a higher energetic content than wood chips. This is extremely important to obtain an optimized system for the logistics (stocking, transport) and also for the optimization of the combustion as well.
Quality control
Pelletizing requires control on the raw material (remove impurity, filter low qualiy material, etc..). Therefore it is possible to achieve a product with a standard and constant quality, without components that could damage the combustion. As a result it is possible the application of high efficiency systems specifically designed for high quality biomass.
Stable and efficient combustion
due to the high energy density, stable ash content and low humidity
Fast ignition
System using pellet are more responsive (turn on and off much faster) than system designed for standard wood chips which are characterized by long latency
Certified
European certification for quality standards
Microbial stability
The reduce humidity content of pellet inhibits the microbial activity. In wood chips stocks with standard humidity it has been shown that the microbial activity reduce the energy content up to 20% of the total initial energy. In the worst scenarios it can also trigger the start of fires.
Less water retention
The cylindrical shape of the pellet offers a compact form and small surface area. This results in limited exposure to humidity, thus reducing water retention.
Automatable
The standard cylindrical shape of the pellet (usually of 6-8 mm diameter) and the small format, allows to easily transport the pellet with simple and economical mechanical solutions (e.g. auger screw). This characteristic makes the product easy to move without incurring in common problems found in wood chips such as blockages, bridges cause by the irregular shape of the product that could cause the block of the furnace.
Modulability
The standard- homogeneous shape, the regularity of the pellet shape allows a fine regulation of the burner, a fine control of the combustion, less fuel consumption, better emission and efficiency.
Wood pellet
- Easy to retrieve
- Quality certified
- Performing combustion
- If it is high quality it does not create Synterization Synterization. In the biomass can be present chemical components that melt at low temperature (low melting point). During the combustion, this components melt; as a result the ash is agglomerated in large solid blocks of ash. This phenomenon is called synterization.
- Low ash content
Agripellet
- Non always easy to retrieve
- At the moment there are not quality standards or certifications
- Heating capacity lower than wood
- Can have Synterization Synterization. In the biomass can be present chemical components that melt at low temperature (low melting point). During the combustion, this components melt; as a result the ash is agglomerated in large solid blocks of ash. This phenomenon is called synterization.
- higher ash content
- Economical
- Re-purposing of the farming waste
- Can be used with a technology specifically designed for this type of biomass
